Here are a few tips on how to get your career back on track after maternity leave.

Decide on a day to go back to work, preferably in the middle of the week, so you would have two or three days of work and then be with your baby on the weekend.

Meet with your boss as it is imperative you schedule a meeting with at least, a week before your return to the workplace. If you’re lucky, your boss will be a person who understands the practical issues and challenges of becoming a new mother, this makes getting your career back on track after maternity leave a speedy process. Discuss key issues such as your workload, flexible work hours or even the possibility of working from home. Make sure you know all your organisational policies on maternity leave, flexible working and return to work.

Childcare – Creating a comprehensive system for the care for your baby in your absence after your maternity leave is important. If you do not have a family member who can look after the baby, you may need to seek a professional babysitter or other childcare arrangements. The planning for the cost also comes into play.

Don’t forget to eat wholesome nutritious food to keep your energy levels up.

If Breastfeeding, leave a sufficient supply of your breast milk for your baby. For this, you would save a breast pump and containers necessary to preserve and store the milk. It is also important to take the breast pump to work, and in cases of breast leaks, have additional blouses on hand that you could change into.

Try to be organised and create a to-do list of your daily tasks. This will ensure that you do not miss out on something to do before you leave for work.
