Mother’s Day Around the World
Mother’s Day is a special day set aside in celebration of mothers all over the world. Across the globe as we celebrate this special day over the next few months, many of us will never forget Mother’s Day 2020 as an unprecedented year to remember how precious our mothers are and the important role, they play in keeping us loved and safe. Many other countries celebrate Mother’s day on the second Sunday in May while other countries celebrate on a fixed day such as May 10th, Spain for example, will celebrate their Mother’s day on May 3rd. In the UK, it’s held on the fourth Sunday of Lent and three weeks before Easter Sunday. So, while not every country celebrates Mother’s Day at the same time, what’s important is to honour mothers worldwide and that most countries do celebrate this special day.
Here is a look at how Mother’s Day is celebrated across the globe.
United Kingdom – March 22th, 2020
Mother’s Day in the UK, also known as Mothering Sunday, is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in the month of Lent, so it falls on a different date each year. In the UK Mother’s Day is celebrated with families treating their mothers to a meal, flowers and presenting her with gifts.
United States – May 10th, 2020
In the U.S. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May each year. On this day, it is common for families to take their mother to a restaurant for lunch or dinner and to present her with flowers and gifts. Young children often make their mother a homemade card to show their appreciation for her.
India – May 10th, 2020
Mother’s Day is a fairly new addition to Indian culture and is celebrated mostly in metropolitan areas with many rural areas remaining unaware of the holiday. India celebrates it on the second Sunday in May by presenting their mothers with gifts and flowers.
Mexico – May 10th, 2020
In Mexico, Mother’s Day, known as “El Dia de la Madre,” is celebrated on the fixed date of May 10th. There is a tradition to begin the day with a famous song, “Las Mananitas” followed by gift giving and preparing a meal in honour of their mothers.
Australia- May 10th, 2020
Mother’s Day is celebrated in Australia on the second Sunday in May. In Australia, it is a tradition to present mother’s with chrysanthemums both because the flower is naturally in season during the time and because its name ends with “mum”. Men will also often wear chrysanthemums on this day in honour of their mothers.
